Uses and Administration

Aranesp is approved for treating anemia in two primary patient populations:

• Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) : For patients with CKD, including those on and not on dialysis, Aranesp helps to increase and maintain hemoglobin levels, reducing the need for red blood cell transfusions.
• Cancer Patients Receiving Chemotherapy : It is used to treat anemia in patients with non-myeloid malignancies who are receiving myelosuppressive chemotherapy that will be used for at least two months.

Aranesp is administered as an injection, either intravenously (IV) or subcutaneously (SC), with dosing schedules varying from once weekly to once every four weeks, depending on the condition and the patient's response.

Aranesp carries a Boxed Warning, the FDA's most serious alert, due to significant potential side effects.

• Increased Risk of Serious Cardiovascular Events : Targeting a high hemoglobin level with Aranesp (greater than 11 g/dL) increases the risk of heart problems (heart attack, heart failure), stroke, and blood clots (deep venous thrombosis, pulmonary embolus).
• Increased Risk of Death/Tumor Progression in Cancer Patients : In controlled clinical trials, ESAs like Aranesp increased the risks for death and serious adverse cardiovascular reactions in cancer patients. The tumor may also grow faster, and patients may die sooner if they choose to take Aranesp.
• Other Potential Side Effects : High blood pressure, seizures, severe allergic reactions, and rare but severe skin reactions have also been reported.
